Kathmandu, Nepal: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Tibet region on Wednesday night, with tremors felt in Mustang and parts of Baglung and the Dhaulagiri area.

The earthquake was recorded at 9:53 p.m., according to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the earthquake was about 35 kilometres below the surface.

The tremor was felt in Mustang, including the area around Lo Manthang, as well as in parts of Baglung and the Dhaulagiri range. It was also felt in parts of Tibet and other areas of Nepal.

Early reports had identified the area around Lo Manthang as the earthquake’s epicentre. However, the EMSC has located the earthquake in Tibet. The exact epicentre will be clearer once the seismic data are reviewed by the concerned authorities.

No deaths, injuries or major damage have been reported in Nepal so far.

Local authorities are checking the affected areas for possible damage. There have also been no reports so far of landslides or other incidents linked to the earthquake.

Mustang lies along Nepal’s northern border with Tibet. The area is part of the Himalayan region, where earthquakes occur from time to time.
